Phlegraean Fields · Bay of Naples

An active caldera,
and two millennia
of wonder

The ancient Greeks named this peninsula the «burning fields», and the Romans chose it as their coastal retreat. Beneath your feet lies one of Italy's most remarkable archaeological areas, with the Mediterranean ten minutes away and volcanic islands framed in the view. Here is our personal curation, ordered by distance from your door.

Sea, pool and sunsets

Six spots for water and relaxation
01

Acquamorta Harbour

10 minEvening promenade

A sheltered inlet protected from coastal currents. Enjoy an espresso, artisan gelato, gentle sea breezes, and views of Procida island just across the water. In summer, direct fast ferries to the islands depart from here.

02

Miliscola Beach

15 min walkFull beach day

The area's most popular sandy beach: dark volcanic sand forming a long sweeping bay that ends against the Capo Miseno headland. Features both full-service beach clubs and free public stretches. Parking can be busy in peak hours, so walking or going early is recommended.

03

Le Foglie d'Argento

5 min walkPool · Relaxation

A serene garden sanctuary with swimming pools, sunbeds and greenery — an ideal alternative for swimming, sunbathing, and tranquil afternoons without sand.

Viale Olimpico 64, Bacoli
04

Schiacchetiello Cove

12 minIntimate

A secluded natural cove tucked into volcanic tuff rocks with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Small and intimate: head there early in the morning, or after 4:00 pm when the light softens and crowds disperse.

05

Torregaveta Pier

10 minSunset

The long wooden pier, evening drinks, and one of the most unforgettable sunsets in the Gulf: the sun dips right into the channel between Procida and Ischia. Also the terminus for the Cumana train to Naples. Arrive 40 minutes before sunset for the best spots.

06

Belvedere Stupor Mundi

8 minFree admission

Miliscola bay curving toward Capo Miseno, the islands on the left and Mount Vesuvius in the background. The hour before twilight offers the most magical golden glow, with no tickets or reservations required.

Spring
Belvedere Stupor Mundi: the sun sets behind Ischia and illuminates Capo Miseno in warm amber tones.
Summer
Torregaveta Pier with a refreshing drink. Arrive 40 minutes ahead to secure your spot.
Autumn & Winter
Acquamorta Harbour. Quiet walks, crisp sea air, and on clear days the sharp silhouette of Mount Vesuvius across the bay.
Panoramic view of Capo Miseno and Miliscola from Belvedere Stupor Mundi
Miliscola bay and Capo Miseno headland at sunset, just 8 minutes from La Casetta.

Stones and wonders

Two thousand years underfoot
01

Piscina Mirabilis

10 minBooking required

The largest Roman cistern ever engineered: forty-eight monumental pillars hand-carved into the volcanic tuff, fifteen metres high. A subterranean cathedral that supplied the western imperial fleet at Misenum. Advance reservation is mandatory.

Via Piscina Mirabile, Bacoli
02

Aragonese Castle of Baia

8 minClosed Mondays

A late fifteenth-century clifftop fortress overlooking the bay, now housing the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields. Contains the reconstructed Sacellum of the Augustales and Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio, alongside panoramic views spanning the entire Gulf.

03

Casina Vanvitelliana

13 min

An eighteenth-century royal hunting lodge designed by Carlo Vanvitelli, set on wooden stilts in the waters of Lake Fusaro and connected by an elegant footbridge. A timeless architectural landmark of Campania.

Bourbon Park, Lake Fusaro
04

Cumae & the Sybil's Cave

25 min

The earliest Greek colony on the Italian mainland. Deep inside the acropolis lies a 100-metre trapezoidal rock corridor where, according to Virgil's Aeneid, the Sybil uttered her cryptic oracles: silence, ancient echoes, and sacred light.

05

Phlegraean Archaeological Network

15 – 40 min

Not an isolated ruin, but an interconnected system: the Roman imperial Thermal Baths of Baia, Pozzuoli's Flavian Amphitheatre, the Cumae acropolis, and the Castle museum. A combined multi-day ticket (CircuitoFlegreo) is available and offers great value if visiting two or more sites.

Unique experience
The Underwater Sunken City of Baia
Due to volcanic bradyseism, half the ancient Roman resort town slid below sea level. Visit by glass-bottom boat, snorkelling, or scuba diving: Roman streets, mosaics, and marble statues resting four metres underwater.

Ask about the catch
The menu is only a guide. Ask what arrived from the boats today — it is the question every Italian waiter expects.
Coffee at the counter
Standing up, quick, and costs less than table service. Pay at the till before or after, according to the bar.
Golden rule
From June to September, always book your table in advance — even for two, even on weeknights. Everyone dines out in summer.

What to drink like a local: a crisp white Falanghina dei Campi Flegrei or a mineral red Piedirosso. Both grown on this volcanic tuff soil, just miles from the house.
